If you can't find prepared cayenne tea, brew some by using 1/4 teaspoon of powder in a cup of distilled water or 10 or more drops of cayenne concentrate in a cup of water. If you're struggling with weight issues, oolong, ginseng and green tea can boost metabolism. Green tea also has antioxidants to help stimulate the immune system and it may help with hair loss, although studies are inconclusive. Drinking chamomile tea daily may help decrease blood glucose levels and prevent diabetes. Cinnamon tea can boost brain function and memory and help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Mate tea, an herbal tea native to South America, has less caffeine and is more nutritious than tea or coffee and can be energizing without side effects. For sleep disorders caused by hypothyroidism, try skullcap or valerian root tea. To make skullcap tea, steep 2 teaspoons dried leaves in 1 cup boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes and strain. To prepare valerian tea, steep 2 teaspoons dried, chopped root in 1 cup boiling water for 8 to 12 hours and strain. Other herbs that can boost blood circulation, alertness and the immune system include astragalus, echinacea, ginkgo, burdock root, dandelion and red clover. To make a tea from any of these herbs, steep 1 to 3 teaspoons dried herb or root in 1 cup boiling water for 5 to 15 minutes before straining.

Natural Extracts
According to the Mayo Clinic, natural remedies for hypothyroidism are available. Ask your doctor about the hormone thyroxin, which naturally occurs in the thyroid. This medication is available by prescription, and can help increase production of hormones in the thyroid gland.

Supplements for control of hypothyroidism are available at your local health store, but the Mayo Clinic cautions people to talk with their doctor before taking these. Since supplements aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they may have issues with potency.

Medications to Avoid
When controlling hypothyroidism naturally, it's important to avoid medications that lower thyroid function. The U.S. Library of Medicine reports that medications such as amiodarone, lithium and propylthiouracil and methimazole may cause hypothyroidism. Make sure to partner closely with your doctor when creating a natural treatment plan.

When to Call a Doctor
When using herbal remedies to control hypothyroidism, it's important to watch symptoms closely. If you develop pain in the chest, increased heart rate or unexplained weight gain, call your doctor right away.

Also, watch for potential complications. The U.S. Library of Medicine reports complications of this condition may include: low blood pressure, low blood sugar and infertility issues. In addition, people with this condition may have a lower-than-normal temperature or suffer complications during infections. Talk with your doctor about these symptoms.

Brassica Vegetables
Brassica is a genus of plants that includes broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, mustard and turnip greens. People with hypothyroidism should avoid eating these specially if raw, says Rakel. Brassica vegetables have substances called goitrogens, which can reduce the function of the thyroid gland.

Soybeans
Soybeans and their products, such as tofu, soy flour, soy lecithin and soybean oil, contain the isoflavone genistein. This substance can interfere in the absorption of iodine, already deficient in individuals suffering from hypothyroidism, according to Rakel.

Cassava and Spinach
Cassava is rich in thiocyanate, a substance that in high quantities can lead to an underactive thyroid gland and cause hypothyroid, reports Rakel. Like cabbage and other Brassica plants, spinach also contains goitrogens, which can affect thyroid function.

Add the recommended amount of fiber to your diet when you have a hypothyroid condition. Foods that contain fiber include fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

Opt for medication that can assist you in your plan to lose weight. You should check with your doctor about natural supplements that help improve a thyroid issue, such as bladderwrack (sea weed) and iodine.


With a thyroid condition, you may have to force yourself to lose weight. And don't let this circumstance get you down. You have the ability to control your weight, even if it feels as if you don't. You just need to come to terms with the condition and make dealing with it a way of life.
